The study's participants were from the USA, Mexico, Thailand and other places around the world. They were asked to smell various vials in random order and rank the scents from most to least pleasant. After vanilla, the next most preferred was the fruity ethyl butyrate, reminiscent of pineapple, while the floral and spicy note of linalool, found in lavender, ranked third. The least pleasant scent was isovaleric acid, with its sharp cheese like smell.
