Fleuve Tendre: the colorful lagoon
Although the name of the fragrance translates as "tender river" or "river of tenderness," the overall impression it left on me is exactly that of a lagoon, separated from the sea by a coral reef, a closed ecosystem with its own charm, rules, and aromatic aura.
An extremely impressive and vivid opening
From the very first spritz, a spicy citrus breeze bursts forth, followed by animalic notes and a bouquet of spices. The citruses fade and recede, but they never disappear completely, as is traditionally the case with such an opening.
The trio of cardamom, musk, and vetiver is well known from Sophie Constant's work for Narciso Rodriguez. What's different here is the exquisite spiced rose, applied in combination with the animalic fragment. As a great admirer of this perfumer, there is one thing I can say for certain about her: this woman knows how to bring rose to life in a fragrance. The note here is not central, but it is decisive for the overall development and character of the scent.
Despite the abundance of heavy ingredients and the complex pyramid, the fragrance feels airy and fresh, palpably fleshy and moist. The animalic notes don't sound as intense as in Belle Bete and Peau de Bete, but they are certainly present, delivered in the brand's signature style: an exceptional musk, balanced on the edge between its raw, carnal, bodily embodiment and the embodiment of purity and freshness, harmoniously uniting the masculine and feminine principles.
The sensation of water never leaves the fragrance. It simply flows, glows, shimmers, as if its entire base lay underwater. Very blue in feeling, a watercolor blue like from a child's paint box, easy to perceive and rather difficult to describe.
My first trial almost convinced me that this is more of a distinctly men's fragrance that wouldn't pass as unisex. On our second encounter, I realized that it's the interplay of vetiver and spices which, combined with the animalic notes, creates this sense of masculinity. However, it turned out not to be quite as dominant; on my skin, it's like the trace left by a just-released embrace.
The general consensus is that this is a dressed-up version of Declaration Cartier, and there is indeed some resemblance, but to my nose, that one is dominated by woody accords, lacking a unisex direction as well as similar depth and allure. Of course, in 2022, I don't expect the Holy Grail of niche perfumery, but credit must be given to this original and dazzlingly attractive composition, brimming with imagination and unconventionality. A casual aphrodisiac fragrance with great flexibility and water, so much water, all the way to its complete fade out, without ever being a run of the mill aquatic. The color of the bottle is fantastic, as if a thunderstorm were reflected in a sea of mirrors, which further complements the overall concept.
